Family outings in Barcelona

Barcelona is a children's city: the sea by metro, parks on every hill, museums that open spaces for under-sixes, neighbourhood libraries and a popular culture where giants and castellers parade for the little ones. Here are our addresses, all checked on official websites.

Parks, beaches and playgrounds

Between the sea and the Collserola hills, there is always greenery or sand within fifteen minutes: equipped beaches, historic parks, playgrounds in the Eixample courtyards and two hills, Montjuïc and Tibidabo, reached by funicular.

Good to know

  • Barcelona has almost five kilometres of beaches, bathing spots and leisure areas, from the Barceloneta to Llevant, all reachable by metro; the beaches are smoke-free, and a dog area is set up in high season at Llevant beach. Source
  • Collserola natural park, almost 11,000 hectares above the city, is Barcelona's green lung; the Carretera de les Aigües, a wide flat path of nearly ten kilometres along the hillside, is perfect for pushchairs and children's bikes, with views over the whole city. Source
  • At Tibidabo, the picnic areas and slides are free for everyone, even without entering the amusement park; on Montjuïc, the Joan Brossa Gardens occupy the former amusement park and the hill is reached by funicular or cable car. Source
  • The inner courtyards of the Eixample blocks open to the public hide small playgrounds; for big spaces, aim for the Fòrum park (bathing area and giant slides), Diagonal Mar, the Nou Barris central park, Can Batlló or the Castell de l'Oreneta park and its miniature train. Source

Activities, clubs and holidays in French

Keeping French alive when school is Catalan, or diving into Catalan life when school is French: the Institut français, the Lycée, the municipal casals and the esplais cover both. We found no French-speaking scout group in Barcelona; the Catalan esplais and caus play that role.

Good to know

  • The Institut français offers children beginners' courses (ages 4 to 5) and general French (6 to 10), a 'for French speakers' course for ages 4 to 10 who already speak French, workshops and a summer casal (6 to 10); enrolment is possible all year and includes a year's access to the médiathèque. Source
  • The Lycée français de Barcelone brings together clubs ('Find your club' document), a school sports association modelled on the French ASS and a parents' sports association (basketball, handball, volleyball), reserved for its pupils; two parents' associations, APE and ALI, animate school life. Source
  • For the holidays, the municipal 'Vacances d'estiu' campaign lists over a thousand activities and hundreds of thousands of places for ages 1 to 17 (casals, camps, sports courses), with grants for families in difficulty; year-round, the municipal casals infantils and toy libraries welcome children after school. • The Festival de la Infància takes over the Montjuïc exhibition centre from 27 December until the Kings arrive, and the Three Kings parade on 5 January, with the Gran Via toy fair, closes the festivities: the Kings land at the Port Vell before parading through town. Source
  • February: the Festes de Santa Eulàlia (12 to 15 February in 2026) are the winter festa major, family-friendly and participatory, where children and young people from the colles are the stars: giants and bestiary, castells, devils, the Laies parade; Carnival follows, with Dijous Gras and the rua.
