Luxembourg

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a remarkably gentle expat move for a French family: Paris is just over two hours away by train, and above all French is spoken everywhere, from the bakery to the counter. It is home to one of Europe's largest French communities, between residents and cross-border workers, and you quickly feel at home.

FIAFE network

The Accueil for French-speaking families

In each city, a volunteer-run association from the FIAFE network welcomes, informs and helps French-speaking families settling in.

Luxembourg Accueil (Information)

Since 1977

Since 1977, Luxembourg Accueil has helped French-speaking families settle in: practical information, workshops, cultural outings, classes (languages, cooking, art of living) and a support network that makes all the difference in the early months.

Where to meet them

Open Monday to Friday, 9am-12pm and 2pm-4pm; details and sign-ups on the website.

What they offer

  • Personalised welcome for newcomers
  • Workshops and classes (languages, cooking, crafts)
  • Cultural visits and tours discovering Luxembourg
  • Welcome coffee and a family support network

Other support networks

Two large national networks also support the French abroad, each with its local chapter.

  • UFE

    UFE Luxembourg

The Luxembourg chapter of the Union des Français de l'Étranger: welcome, mutual aid and practical advice (jobs, settling in, studies) for the French in Luxembourg.

  • Français du monde – ADFE

Français du monde – ADFE Luxembourg

The Luxembourg section of Français du monde - ADFE defends the rights of the French in Luxembourg and supports them with their paperwork, in a spirit of solidarity and citizenship.

The French business network

The local French chamber of commerce (CCI France International network) is a real asset for work: networking, job offers and help to restart a career or start a business locally.

CCI France International

CCI France Luxembourg (Chambre Française de Commerce et d'Industrie au Luxembourg)

The Franco-Luxembourg chamber brings together more than 280 French and Luxembourgish companies. Networking, regular events and a members' jobs module (offers and applications) make it a valuable support for a spouse looking for work or setting up professionally.

AEFE network

Schools and education

The main French landmark is the Vauban school and lycée in Gasperich, teaching around 2,600 pupils from nursery to final year. Alongside it, the free multilingual Luxembourg state school and the European Schools round out a fairly unique range of options.

Good to know

  • Vauban (AEFE partner) follows the French curriculum: in high demand, so apply as soon as the move is confirmed.
  • Luxembourg state school is free but multilingual (Luxembourgish, German then French): a challenge for a child arriving from the French system.
  • European Schools prioritise children of EU institution staff.
  • Several international and private schools offer French or English-language tracks.

Children's healthcare

The Luxembourg system is generous and quick to access. Joining the CNS (national health fund) unlocks high reimbursements, and you see the paediatrician freely, with no mandatory referral pathway.

Good to know

  • First step: join the CNS, usually through the employer, for the whole family.
  • You freely choose your paediatrician and see them directly, with no GP referral.
  • Many doctors speak French: the language barrier is almost non-existent.
  • 112 is the emergency number; the Kannerklinik (children's hospital) is the paediatric reference.

French-speaking community

The French are one of the country's largest communities, between residents and cross-border workers: you are an expat without feeling out of place. French is an administrative language, and daily life largely happens in our tongue.

Good to know

  • Luxembourg Accueil (FIAFE network) has animated the French community since 1977.
  • UFE Luxembourg and Français du monde - ADFE complete the support network.
  • French is enough for most things: admin, shops, schools.
  • Closeness to France (Paris just over 2h by train) makes trips home and family visits easy.

Family outings and events

A small country, but a huge playground for children: the UNESCO-listed old town, parks everywhere, family-friendly museums and endless forests just minutes from the centre.

Good to know

  • The Bock casemates and the old town are like an open-air history book to explore.
  • The Parc merveilleux in Bettembourg delights little ones from spring onwards.
  • The National Museum of Natural History (natur musée) runs workshops for children.
  • The Schueberfouer, the big late-summer funfair, is a family must.

These landmarks change fast: the MumExpat community will keep them up to date.
